Arrived
in Delhi at lunchtime. We took a taxi to Paharganj about 20 minutes
it cost around 500 rupees, we could of got it for less but were
foolish and jumped the gun. It was overwhelming first setting foot in
Delhi, We were dropped at the end of the main bazaar and literally stumbled up the street looking for a hostel. We found a hotel called
Vikram right in the centre of the madness (rs 850 per night). There
are lots of hostels to choose from, this one wasn't the cheapest, but
it was quite clean, fresh sheets with your own bathroom and a fan
that went so fast we were seriously worried about decapitation. We
spent the day wandering up and down the Main Bazzar, full of shops
selling all the clothes, jewellery that would stock Glastonbury 5
times over. We came to the conclusion that coming to india you
really don't need to bring anything with you, you can get everything
you need here and at a 5th
of the price! Its important to haggle a little, we were too shy at
first but its important to make a go at it. Got cycle rickshaw to
Chandni Chowk, the traffic of people rickshaw's,motor bikes, cars and
buses is amazing, constant beeping of horns, it's chaos, but
fascinating and we got there in the end (rs 70). Felt bad for the old
guy that was taking us there it was a real slog, so gave him rs 100
instead. We Had a Talhi for dinner on Chadni Chowk and walked round
the Red Fort at the desperate to find a toilet! Note-there are no
toilets in Delhi, its literally impossible for a woman, either drink
no fluid or wear a skirt to your feet so you can squat in a quite
corner. Delhi is such an assault on all your sense the rickshaw became
a little haven for us, from the safety of its back seat we could see
everything yet the constant hassle from touts etc couldn't quite get
at us!
